I’m a vegetarian, so I don’t raise chickens to eat them as poultry. I do use and eat their eggs, but I never exploit them.
I have a large backyard, so I keep the chickens fenced in there, giving them room to move about and have a good life. I have a shed where the chickens are kept as well, but only at night or in bad weather. It provides them shelter, but once again, there is also enough room for the chickens to move in the shed as well.
are not cramped in cages. I like chickens and birds in general, so I’m glad to keep them as pets. Many people think about rescuing cats and dogs from shelters, but they rarely think about rescuing chickens. I do. I go to farms where chickens are raised for slaughter, or where chickens are kept in disgusting conditions. I buy the chickens off those farmers and give them a much better life.
I never pump them with chemicals to produce eggs, this all happens naturally. The health benefits of free-range eggs should not ignored. My chickens are never fed genetically modified food or animal-derived byproducts, they are fed greens, so when I eat their eggs I am not consuming anything dangerous.
Of course, keeping chickens is not for everyone. It is not easy or convenient to keep these birds in the conditions they deserve. It can be costly to maintain clean and sanitary conditions. Also, many other people do not understand, they think it is strange to have chickens as pets. However, I think it is worth the cost and opinions of others. To me, keeping chickens is rewarding.
