It’s now been six months since that fateful day when my wife came to me with a bizarre suggestion. “Why don’t we buy a chicken?” she said to me with a grin.
I was shocked. Why on earth would we, a couple of suburbanites, want to buy a chicken? I thought for sure she was joking. But she was not. It turns out a friend of hers from work has been keeping chickens for a number of years. They got talking one day, and my wife became utterly convinced that this would be an amazing idea.
Naturally, I was sceptical. But after we talked about it, and checked into our local bylaws, we decided to go for it. And I realized that building a chicken coop would be a great little construction project to keep me busy for a while. It wasn’t until after the chicken came along that I realized the real benefit.
Two words: fresh eggs. Nothing has ever seemed so fresh and delicious as the amazing eggs that we now enjoy every morning. I always thought that I enjoyed eggs, but now I really know how good they can be. My wife also loves looking after the little lady, who we’ve named Magnus.
The kids get a real kick out of her too, she’s really brought our family together. I am so glad we decided to try our hands at keeping a chicken at home. It has been a great experience, and we have never looked back!
